Old Councillors’ Plans

Come Old Councillors and follow
Down the ‘dotage track’ to home
Hear that laughter – seer and hollow
When you’re trapped and cannot roam

Make decisions – take your chances
Wake the selfishness you’ve won
You’ll have need as time advances
Need for care before you’ve gone

Don’t condemn who goes before you
To some distant travelled plot
‘Nuisance victim’ of the plans you
Made today – when you forgot

There is no-one who forever
Can be certain of their wealth
Lay your plans but never never
Feel you’ll always have good health

Just consider ‘marbles rolling’
Coal in fridge and thinking lost
Trim the treatment you are doling
Out to those who count the cost

Marry in your own confusions
Found a year or two away
Where you’ll suffer from conclusions
Of those plans you make today

With your neediness and sorrow
‘Harassed carer’ – ‘Living sick’
Plan for local care – tomorrow
Or you’ll suffer
Take your pick
